My name is Willem Gijsels. I'm of Belgian nationality. I work here in the field of telecommunications as a patent examiner.

I'm at the forefront of the technology. I see a lot of new inventions, a lot of new things and it's a very dynamic field. I like the fact that it's technical. I also like the fact that we have to work in teams. It's not one person delivering a patent or granting a patent, it's three people and we have to collaborate with colleagues in our own field. So it's team work. I also like the legal aspects of the work. That was something new to me, but it is very interesting.

I'm also involved in recruitment. I have heard about the ideal profile of a patent examiner. There is no ideal profile. Regarding personal qualities, integrity is a very important one, but I think that holds for many companies, or most companies. Besides that you have to have an open mind and - a social aspect - you have to be able to work in a team. But, on the other hand, you also have to be able to concentrate and work individually and take on responsibility yourself.

You have to learn a lot when starting as a patent examiner. There is a lot to learn in the first couple of years. There is even an academy in which you will be put when you start working at the Patent Office. You learn a lot, and in the course of the years during your whole career you have to continue to learn.
