Specific requirements for technically qualified members

Candidates for the role of technically qualified member, who in most cases should be scientists or engineers, need to have acquired many years of professional experience in the field of patent law, as either a patent judge, patent examiner, patent attorney or patent expert in industry.

The Boards of Appeal are also interested in individuals with versatile technical backgrounds who have worked across a range of technical fields and who have a track record of very high performance.

In addition to excellent technical analytical skills, candidates also need to have legal analytical skills, with knowledge of the EPC and the case law of the Boards of Appeal and the Enlarged Board of Appeal.
