The Boards of Appeal (BoA) are the final judicial instance in proceedings before the European Patent Office (EPO). Their task is to review decisions taken by the EPO's administrative divisions. The members of the BoA are independent in their decisions and are bound only by the European Patent Convention.


Legal Services provide the BoA with legal support, disseminate information on the BoA case law and provide legal advice and support to the President of the BoA on patent law-related questions and institutional matters.


As a lawyer in Legal Services, you will:

  • draft reports, studies and publications for the BoA and the President of the BoA on legal questions and case law, in particular concerning substantive and procedural patent law
  • draft high-quality documents and reports on legal and administrative questions, paying special attention to linguistic precision and correctness
  • participate in internal legislative initiatives, including their co-ordination and implementation
  • co-ordinate, draft and revise a wide variety of documents to be tabled before internal governing bodies
  • provide support for and represent the BoA in meetings with EPO internal and external bodies
  • prepare, organise and give lectures for internal and external training purposes
  • benefit from our "New Ways of Working" policy that allows you to work from home up to 70% of your working time (including up to 60 days from any of our member states)


Apply if you have:

  • diploma of completed university studies in law at master's level or – in exceptional cases – equivalent professional experience
  • knowledge of the field of industrial property, ideally patent law
  • excellent legal research, analysis and drafting skills
  • very good communication (oral and written) and organisational skills
  • a highly service- and results-oriented approach
  • integrity in handling sensitive information and an understanding of the need for confidentiality
  • good practical IT skills, especially in using electronic search tools
  • excellent knowledge of English (at least C1); working knowledge (at least B2) of another official language (German or French) would be of advantage. In such cases, the willingness to learn the missing language(s) and to reach level B2 within a set time frame would be required
  • citizenship of one of the member states of the European Patent Organisation.


It would be an advantage to have:

  • experience working for a judicial body, a governmental institution or an intergovernmental organisation


Process and timeline

The successful candidate will be selected on the basis of qualifications and relevant experience, supplemented as appropriate by interviews, tests and/or a personality questionnaire. Interviews are provisionally planned on 14 and 15 November 2022.




* after deduction of EPO internal tax and before deduction of staff contributions to the social-security and pension schemes. The salary range depends on experience.
