At the European Patent Office (EPO), we are in the midst of a major transformation, building a DevOps practice and making the agile principles a reality. It's like nothing we've ever done before!

Our mission is to support innovation, competitiveness and economic growth across Europe. We pride ourselves on taking innovation seriously and, in line with our Strategic Plan 2023, are fully committed to digital transformation within the EPO.

With the first projects in this area about to be launched, we are looking for highly creative talent keen to meet the challenges of change. That's why we are developing a talent pool in anticipation of future openings in a broad range of disciplines across the IT field.

The EPO's infrastructure and security areas in particular are currently facing some monumental challenges: from migrating to a new Tier 4 data centre, expanding our disaster recovery capabilities, setting up new cloud platforms as the basis for future development (and migrating some of the legacy functionalities, too), re-platforming the mainframe and reinforcing our cyber defence and cyber intelligence capabilities, to rebuilding our IT service management and monitoring platforms, implementing identity and access management and obtaining ISO 27001 certification (risk management). All of this while "keeping the lights on" and driving through organisational change and implementing new ways of working … Exciting times!

You are a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and dynamic infrastructure and security specialist with in-depth knowledge in at least one of the following areas?

-    Network engineering – we currently run a mainly Cisco network and we need to be ready to support our new data centre as well as our external cloud platforms. We are also looking for candidates with a strong security slant.

-    System engineering – the first microservices are running on a Kubernetes platform at the EPO. This is our target architecture and if we are to make containerisation a reality, we urgently require candidates with relevant experience. Furthermore, we are currently running more than 2 500 virtual machines on VMWare, using both Windows and Linux operating systems. There are opportunities, too, for engineers in those technical fields, and candidates with a broad range of skills right across the board are especially welcome.

-    Security – we are looking for experience in intrusion detection, firewall management, security monitoring, active scanning and incident response.

What we expect from you

•    Diploma of completed studies at master's level in a relevant subject (maths, statistics, computer science, engineering, science, etc.) or equivalent professional experience
•    In-depth knowledge of the above-mentioned technologies and tools
•    Capacity to network, establish and sustain partnerships with a large variety of stakeholders and subject-matter experts
•    Ability to work independently and as part of a team

What we offer

•    A comprehensive and family-friendly benefits package
•    A challenging yet highly rewarding working environment
•    An opportunity to participate in complex IT projects at the heart of the EPO's digital transformation initiative
•    Daily collaboration with a diverse, hard-working and united team of highly skilled and dedicated professionals from all over Europe
•    Self-development opportunities through a broad range of training activities provided by our Talent Academy
•    Access to a wide variety of social activities and clubs
•    Flexibility to work in either Munich or The Hague

This role is a tremendous opportunity for you to both demonstrate and deepen your skills in a multicultural environment, working alongside colleagues from more than 40 countries. The EPO provides excellent training opportunities, including on-the-job learning, internal development programmes, external courses and online training. In addition to the IT training portfolio on offer, we recently revamped our entire management training package and provide in-house courses to hone your soft skills, your personal effectiveness and your project management skills.
