Technical Interview (Examiner's recruitment only)

Being selected for a technical interview is a remarkable accomplishment that you should be extremely proud of. Your impressive academic background, professional experience, and high-quality application truly set you apart. Keep up the fantastic work!

Preselected candidates will be invited to one or more technical interviews, depending on how many positions they have applied. Have you received an invitation from us? Congratulations! It means you have already passed a strict preselection procedure!

What to expect?

The interview will be conducted by the team who found your profile a good match for their field. You can expect to meet the Team Manager and (at least) one Team Member during the interview. The goal of this interview? For the team, to check your suitability/potential for the role.

They are going to verify:

The goal is not only to present your knowledge and potential in the best way possible, but also to gain the understanding of a day-to-day work of a patent examiner. The interviews at EPO are two-sided discussions. Use this opportunity to ask your potential future colleagues questions related to the role of the Patent Examiner, the field or the team. Eventually, this interview will show your suitability for the role but also the suitability of the role for you!

How to prepare

During the interview, you will be asked questions to a specific patent application and technical description of the innovation. It is possible, that one example will be sent to you via e-mail before the interview with some questions, that you must prepare within a limited timeframe. There will be also a live example during the interview.

It is a challenging task! Especially, if you have not worked with such documents before. While preparing for the technical interview familiarise yourself with Espacenet.

The role of the examiner involves carefully looking through documents like the ones Espacenet. It is very important that you:

  • Understand how the search is done
  • Read through a couple patent applications - such documents will appear during your technical interview
