Berlin

The German capital has been the centre of international attention at many points in its eventful history. During the Cold War, Berlin symbolised the clash between East and West. In 1989, the fall of the Berlin Wall signalled the beginning of a new era in world politics, while bringing reunification to German citizens. And never one to disappoint, the city of 3.57 million inhabitants from all over the world continues to make headlines for achievements in the arts, science and world politics. Berlin's inhabitants also cherish their proximity to Poland and the beach resorts on the Baltic coast.

As a time-honoured gateway to eastern Europe and one of the continent's pre-eminently central cities, Berlin is the location of choice for a great number of international companies and organisations. For all its big-city charms, its different boroughs – such as multicultural Kreuzberg or charming Charlottenburg – feel like individual towns, with their own parks and local infrastructure. Berlin may not be the world's richest or prettiest city, but it is vibrant and has retained a sense of humour well summed up by its former mayor Klaus Wowereit: "Berlin is poor, but sexy".
